Orthopedics is a highly specialized area of medicine involving the diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation and prevention of injuries or diseases of the musculoskeletal system. This includes all bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles and nerves. Orthopedic specialists care for people of all ages --- from children who break bones playing soccer to the elderly suffering with arthritis.
Mercy's Director of Orthopedic Surgery is Eric L. Freeman, MD, FAAOS of South Island Orthopaedic Group in Cedarhurst, who also serves as Chief of Sports Medicine.
Dr. Freeman received his medical degree from Northwestern University Medical School, where he was a member of the Honors Program in Medical Education, and he did initial postgraduate training in orthopedic surgery at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, where he served as Chief Resident during his final year.
To further advance his knowledge and specialize his training, Dr. Freeman completed a fellowship in arthroscopic surgery and sports medicine at Orthopaedic Research of Virginia. During his fellowship he served as Associate Physician with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Dr. Freeman is a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, and a member of, and instructor for, the Arthroscopy Association of North America. His work has been published in leading orthopedic journals and presented at local hospitals and society meetings. In addition to his practice duties, Dr. Freeman has also served as the School Physician for Hewlett High School for the past 12 years.
