Mercy Medical Center
Receives “Approval With Commendation” From Commission
On Cancer
Latest Designation Demonstrating
Mercy’s Compliance With Highest Standards of Care
(June 25, 2008 - Rockville Centre, NY)
- In the latest demonstration of Mercy Medical Center’s compliance
with the highest standards of patient care, The Commission on
Cancer of the American College of Surgeons has granted a three-year
Approval With Commendation to the Community Hospital Comprehensive
Cancer Program at Mercy. The designation demonstrates that Mercy
meets the highest national standards for state-of-the-art cancer
prevention, early diagnosis, pretreatment evaluation, staging,
optimal treatment, rehabilitation, surveillance for recurrent
disease, support services, and end-of-life care.
Mercy has held approval from the Commission on Cancer continuously
for 38 years and this latest designation comes just after Mercy
received another full 3-year accreditation and Gold Seal of
ApprovalTM from The Joint Commission, the nation’s predominant
standards-setting and accrediting body in health care. Earlier,
Mercy Medical Center received the 2008 Orthopedic Care Excellence
Award from HealthGrades - marking the fourth year in a row that
the nation’s leading healthcare ratings company has given Mercy’s
program its highest honor - and continuation of its designation
as a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence from the American
Society For Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.
Mercy’s designation as one of only two Commission on Cancer-approved
Community Hospital Comprehensive Cancer Programs in Nassau County
means that Mercy sees 650 or more newly diagnosed cancer cases
each year, provides a full range of diagnostic and treatment
services that are available on site or by referral, and has
a program medical staff whose members are board certified in
the major medical specialties, including oncology where available.
Mercy’s cancer care services include the Bishop McGann Center
for Oncology and Imaging, a dedicated in-patient cancer care
unit, advanced gynecologic oncology services, the latest techniques
in breast and brain surgery, and the Nassau County home of Memorial
Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, which offers its world-class
diagnostic techniques and treatment protocols in the state-of-the-art
MIRACLE Pavilion to patients who otherwise would have to travel
long distances to receive state-of-the-art oncology care.
Established in 1922 by the American College of Surgeons, the
Commission on Cancer is a consortium of professional organizations
dedicated to improving survival rates and quality of life for
cancer patients through standard-setting, prevention, research,
education, an the monitoring of comprehensive, quality care.
Approval by the Commission on Cancer is given only to facilities
that have voluntarily committed to providing the highest level
of quality cancer care and that undergo a rigorous evaluation
process and review of their performance.
