Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation
Physical Medicine, Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation from Injury and/or SurgeryAmong Mercy Medical Center’s premier programs is its comprehensive inpatient Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Unit.
This highly specialized 37-bed facility is dedicated to the rehabilitative care of inpatients who have suffered catastrophic illnesses and injuries such as stroke, spinal cord injury, amputation, major orthopedic surgery, severe disabling arthritis, and acquired brain injury.
All therapy is supervised by our full-time physician, Perry Stein, M.D., who is Board-Certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, as well as Neuromuscular and Electrodiagnostic Medicine. Featured in New York magazine and by U.S. News & World Report as one of New York’s top physiatrists, he is supported by Mercy’s dedicated and caring professional nurses, who have a special interest in tending to this patient population. Utilizing state-of-the-art equipment and techniques to help patients reach their highest possible level of function and independence, the Unit’s staff includes the area’s top physical, occupational and speech therapists that provide compassionate, superior therapy to their patients.
Physical Therapy at Mercy is geared towards maximizing independence with transfers, walking and stair negotiation, as well as balance and strength; all treatments are focused on safely returning to home and community lifestyle.
Mercy’s Occupational Therapy services focus on promoting independence in activities of daily living such as grooming, feeding, dressing and homemaking tasks, as well as, improving range of motion, strength and addressing visual and cognitive deficits. Again, the goal is to return to home and community in safety.
Speech therapy focuses on improving swallowing, auditory comprehension, verbal expression and cognitive skills. The therapists set goals collaboratively with patients to improve functional communication and overall swallowing ability.
The Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Unit is honored to receive referrals from hospitals from across the entire region.
